In my office, we’ve just completed a renovation and construction. The new management company, the one that bought us from the original private owners two years ago, can’t afford to move us to the high class building they want. They can afford to update and upgrade the carpeting, walls, kitchens and the like. We’ve just completed said renovation.
Now… we have new carpet (which makes you dizzy if you look at it too long), new paint on the walls (brown on the outside wall, light grey on the inside wall) and new kitchens with all stainless appliances. Nice new stuff, I shouldn’t have a complaint, should I? Ha!
As with all corporate details, the new renovation is amusing and reflects what this company thinks is truly important. But first, the break down. On the south side of the floor, where the “Small Kitchen” resides, it’s Administration, Accounting, Tech Support and Marketing/Sales. On the North side of the floor, where the “Large Kitchen” resides, all the worker bee’s live: Software Development, QA & Product Design. You know, your money makers. The folks who have the brains to get done what needs to get done to get the sales needed for those big ol’ profits.
Before renovation, the “Large Kitchen” had 3 microwaves and a really big trash can. The microwaves were all mis-matched and filthy as all get out. The fridge opened the wrong way, so that you were always confused as to how to open the darned thing. During lunch rush, all three microwaves would be going full throttle with a line of people waiting to “get in”, like some high class and highly popular night club.
After renovation, all appliances are Stainless and they all match. All of the doors on the fridges open so that the door is flush with the wall when open. The “Small Kitchen” has the large trash receptacle and 2 microwaves that are spotless. The “Large Kitchen”, where most of the employees are international and also most all of them bring their lunch to work, has 1 Microwave (not so clean) and a trash bin that’s 1/2 the size of the original trash bin.
I laffed when I walked into the newly completed “Large Kitchen”. It positively delighted me! So long as the Sales and Upper Management are taken care of, all is good! 😉
