I did it, I bought it!

Ok.. so I bought a hammered dulcimer. It’s called a “Songbird”, in the natural color. It is not a solid hardwood, but a laminate. I tried them out, and had every intention of getting one, but the sad fact is that I cannot lift them. They are very heavy and even the smallest one is right on the edge of what I would be able to lift. So, I decided to get one with more strings than a hard wood. I think I made a good choice.

My playing sucks. However, I’m going to learn and can already do Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. I’m playing by ear, I’m not reading music, but I can. I had 10 years of Clarinet from 5th grade all the way to college. I just want to do something that’s different and something I can enjoy.

Papa thinks I’m nuts. Actually, I think he thinks I just blew money and I’m going to lose interest. I might, but like I told him, it’s a musical instrument, not a salad, it won’t go bad if I put it away for 10 years.

So, tonight I learn how to tune the sucker. It’s out of tune and I know it. I purchased a tuner and I’ll take care of that this evening. I gotta learn sometime.

I’ll get photo’s tomorrow and I’ll also make a little video for you to see me play twinkle twinkle… but that will be later because I need the practice 😉

Hope you enjoy it. You know practice, practice, practice. That’s what they tell you.

  3. Beth says:

Have lots of fun with it. Soon you will be proficient and you can play a concert for us.

I hope you really do enjoy your new instrument. I never had a flair for the exotic instruments and remain a guitarist. I think it never hurts to pick something up that stretches us some. I can’t wait to see some pictures.

Enjoy and practice. You’re doing this for both of us. I never got past "Teaching Little Fingers to Play" on the piano, honked my way through HS band, and had to stand between two people who could actually sing in chorus. Despite my near total inability to produce a melodic noise, I love to listen to music and the dulcimer is one of my favorite instruments to hear. My opinion is that if you can afford it without hurting anyone, get what pleases you. You can even look at this as your contribution to the recovery of the dulcimer production sector of a crumbled economy.Peace, Doc

That is a much bigger insturment than I thought it was going to be. Will listen to Twinkle when you put it up….
